5/18/2006 flooding suxSunday
mother's day begins...another day of crazy rain (i think it'd been like 10 days in a row at this point)...but, then it changes that night from just a lot of rain to crazy flood warnings all over the place (MA/NH/Maine). we take a quick drive - prob 200 yards - to the Merrimac River - just to see the beast. we get there and realize that major flooding has begun in our development and is heading our way. panic starts. i check weather forecasts online - river expected to go up 10 FEET in the next 24 hrs! - WHAT? - freak out panic occurs. the rest of the night involves us packing up the entire basement and moving it upstairs. we finally go to sleep around 3am.
Monday
we awake at 6am to prob a 4 inch stream of water in our back yard...it's coming. by 7am - oh, there's about 3-5 feet of water - no joke - something beyond freak out panic occurs. we don't go to work - make multiple trips to home depot for 50pd bags of kids sandbox sand (think we ended up with about 60 bags total) - continued to prep inside the house. then the power goes out. so, now it's a different level - gotta pack up the frig/freezer and luggage to head to jon's rents. the water continues to rise behind our house - it's about 5 ft from our steps - the road is closed one way. we manage to get a full tarp stapled to the house - sand bags all around - then we evacuate ~2pm.
we return ~8pm to check - drive into the complex - see a port-a-potty every 10 feet (always a good sign). then we get to our door and see a flyer - water turned off, sewer turned off - yep - another good sign. then to the back yard where the flooding was going on - to our surprise, the condo association built a 5 ft dirt levy! it had almost stopped the water and pretty much saved our place from flooding. i'm not gonna lie, i cried.
Tuesday
bc we stayed at jon's parents Mon. night - Aiden was out of his element - and decided that from 2am to 6am he just wanted to scream/kick/cry. needless to say - Tuesday was a great day at work. we now had 3 hrs of sleep Sun. night and about 4 hours Monday night...progress!
Wednesday
Tuesday night was another repeat of freak-out-Aiden...although he only kept us awake from 3-6am, so we maxed out w/ 5 hours of sleep - see, more progress...but, still dragging at work. good news this day - the water had pretty much gone down and we're in the clear. only problem is limited water usage allowed - no dishwasher/washing machine/limited toilet & shower/etc. still have the stunning port-a-potties every 10 feet. but, who cares, we're back at home. took down the tarp and returned the gabillion kids sand bags to home depot - they luuuuved it.
Thursday
life is back to normal - cept we're now walking around all the boxes we had to pack - but, who cares - less packing we'll have to do in a month!
overall...i personally was soo stressed w/ the whole flooding thing - and potentially losing the house-buyer, along w/ ruining all our hard work of the basement/etc....anyway, i'm in a better place now...out of survivor mode and back into the ability to watch tv and sit on my couch with a beer. here are some photos of documentation. |
