    mail list jackpot

tis the season for excessive mail.  the number of catalogs we get this time of year is insane.  but, due to my profession of marketing, i have a respectable appreciation for someone buying a mail list and thinking i would be a good fit for their junk mail.  knowing that...i find amusement when checking out the variety of random mail i receive.

just recently we received the best thus far...the Catalogue For Philanthropy.  i opened the envelope and enclosed was a letter and a HUGE catalog - like the size of an Abercrombie & Finch magazine/book thing.  because i know they spent about $5 on printing and mailing that monstrosity, i skim the letter for some brief amusement.  Here's the beginning of the first paragraph:

"This 11th Edition of the Catalogue for Philanthropy is a gift to you and your family this holiday season.  Its purpose is to promote philanthropy in Massachusetts.  It is being sent to 120,000 relatively affluent homes statewide, almost all of whom are already involved in charitable giving and volunteering."

so, my reaction - "HA - Jon - guess what - we're one of the 120,000 relatively affluent homes in MA - high five!  we apparently donated somethan at some point, so that's good for us.  maybe this means we're now on some important rich people list!  i like that some marketing list buyer thinks we're rich...that should clearly mean somethan."

then i stopped reading the letter, went back to reality...handed the catalog + letter to jon..."can you throw this away with the other junk mail - we have no money."

the joy of a subject line

i get a bunch of email newsletters on topics from marketing to search engines to sports to kid stuff.  one eNewsletter i get is from WebMD - which is about family health stuff.  so, this morning i open up my email and the subject line for their latest eNewsletter is: "Saggy Breasts? Don't Blame Breastfeeding".  seriously - i had to paste some of it below because i didn't think people would believe me.  this is what i get to read when waking up on a Saturday morning?

now, i do marketing for a living.  i create subject lines all the time, and i fully appreciate the ability to grab attention while also relating to the person with something they need.  bc i know what goes into creating subject lines/etc., i'm hysterical imagining the process and the people that created, recommended and approved this subject line.  BUT, i will give them credit bc after reading that subject line, how was i not going to click through and read whatever they had in store for me?  so, just for your information - bc i know you're dying to know - saggy breasts are caused by smoking and old age bc they both hamper the skin's elasticity.  so, if you're a smoker, start paying attention to those droop'n boobs...
